Fabulous fairy-tale-based series of ‘readers’ designed to build skills and confidence in early readers.

Who it’s for:

These ‘readers’ are designed for children aged 5-7 who can read a little but need structured and supportive texts to help build confidence and skills

Why you need these on your bookshelf:

Being the parent of a child learning to read can be both a magical and frustrating experience.

There’s the magic of seeing them progress from recognising their name only, to correcting you when you miss a word from their favourite book. ‘Mum, you missed the word but,’ said my 6 year old last night. Thanks darling.

But, there’s also the frustration of not knowing exactly how to help progress their skills, and how to provide them with engaging reading material.

In my experience, the ‘readers’ you find in schools and libraries tend to be both dated and boring. This is why the ‘Reading with Phonics’ series is such a winner.

Don’t be put off by the mention of  ‘phonics’ – it’s just a fancy word for ‘sounding things out,’ which is one of the prime ways children learn how to read.

The Conversation recently ran a terrific piece outlining clear evidence about the benefits of this system, and how it’s not being used properly in Australian schools.

‘Reading with Phonics’ is a set of familiar tales (including Little Red Riding Hood, Three Little Pigs, and Jack and the Beanstalk) which uses rhyming text to focus on a different key sound.

Bonus for parents – there’s a page at the beginning of each book with helpful hints on how to best help your child with reading. And, at the end of each book, there are a number of different activities (rhyming words, letter sounds, key words) to reinforce the key sounds.

Importantly, the illustrations are colourful, engaging, and supportive of the text – crucial for the beginner reader.
