Thoughts:
Well, it seems there’s no such thing as the ‘sequel blues’ for Drew Dayhalt and Oliver Jeffers! They’ve managed to maintain the spirit of the original crayons, but introduce subtle changes to the format and text (including a glow-in-the-dark page), which make for a fresh reading experience for the kids.
There’s perhaps slightly less text (good for parents!) and the jokes are probably pitched at a slightly more mature audience (again, good for parents!) but it’s hard to imagine a child who won’t enjoy these books.
The anthropomorphising of crayons is really brilliant. Who knew they’d be such a neurotic and sensitive bunch! There’s brown crayon, who objects to being used to draw poo. There’s the previously warring yellow and orange who have put aside their differences over the sun that melted them together and are demanding a return to the box. And there’s maroon crayon, snapped in half by Duncan’s dad sitting on him, and being held together by a paper clip.
This book has become a dinner-time favourite for my children. If you don’t already have it on your Christmas list, add it now.
